Scherzer may be forced to miss a start

Not at all lost in the high note of Miguel Cabrera's 40th home run -- a grand slam, no less -- was the Tuesday night loss of Max Scherzer, who left the game in the bottom of the second inning. Scherzer, the American League leader in strikeouts with 224, had an MRI during the game for right shoulder fatigue. The team announced that the MRI showed no structural damage and Scherzer would not throw for two days before being re-evaluated. "I noticed it in the first inning, but I didn't have any pain in my shoulder," Scherzer said. "My arm was dead." ... If Scherzer, arguably the team's best pitcher the last month, should have to miss a start, left-hander Drew Smyly would likely be the substitute starter. (Detroit Free Press) Comment

Dez Bryant disappointing in Dallas

An outstanding training camp seems not to have carried into the regular season for Dez Bryant, who had appeared to lay the groundwork for his best pro season. [In Week 2,] Seattle's big, physical corners gave Bryant fits, holding him to three receptions for 17 yards in the Cowboys loss. He was targeted seven times. "I thought at times he did a good job," head coach Jason Garrett said. "Other times, he didn't win on enough routes." ... "Everything's hard. But at the same time, if you keep battling, if you win on some of those routes, you have opportunities for bigger plays. You just have to keep fighting, keep competing throughout the ball game. At times he did that, other times he didn't." (The Dallas Morning News) Comment

Knicks eyeing Lou Amundson?

As time ticks down to training camp, filling out rosters is becoming a priority in NBA cities. Kenyon Martin is the player so many continue to link to the Knicks, but K-Mart has remained steadfast in not wanting to accept a veteran's minimum. ... While K-Mart provides more toughness and size to the team, the Knicks might not want to get locked in with a volatile player. Not with other younger candidates still out there, such as Lou Amundson, who is contemplating offers overseas against opportunities in the NBA. Amundson could take a one-year in New York and, if he does well behind Amar'e Stoudemire, turn it into a better deal next summer. Another name to keep an eye on his Shawne Williams, who had success with the Knicks in 2010-11. (Sulia.com) Comment

Jose Mourinho's dry cleaners will have a tough time cleaning the grass stains off his suit from his power slide celebrating Cristiano Ronaldo's winning goal in the 90th minute against Manchester City.
